Tulane season opens at renovated stadium

The stadium couldn't have been built without the finances of donors, who needed to be convinced that building a stadium was smart. Dickson convinced them.

"It wasn't so much that it was a hard sale, but explaining to people that this is kind of a beacon out there for us that says, look, we are not just trying to survive, we are trying to achieve and overcome things that we have been through," he said.

Perhaps most unusual about Greer Field at Turchin Stadium is the artificial playing surface, the same type used in the Superdome. It now gives Tulane an easy-to-manage facility.

"From a distance it does look like one of the most manicured fields you've ever seen in your life," Barto said. "But when you get on it, it's an amazing surface the way it drains rain and the way the ball plays off it.

Egypt and India were hit with massive Internet and phone outages when undersea cables were severed just off the coast of Alexandria. The accident knocked out about 70 percent of Egypt's available bandwidth and cut international phone access by 30 percent. About half of India's capacity was knocked out, though it was able to reroute its traffic through a backup system.

Actress Patty Hearst And Her French Bulldog Win Award At Westminster ...

The owner had just the right touch, trying to soothe her French bulldog's trembling paws.

"There, there," Patty Hearst said.

Far, far removed from the days when her image as a machine gun-toting revolutionary captivated a nation, Patricia Shaw Hearst was in more genteel surroundings Monday. She was tending to Diva at Madison Square Garden, petting her soft head on dogdom's biggest day.

Surrounded by Cardigan Welsh corgis, Chinese shar-peis and Parson Russell terriers, she blended right in at the Westminster Kennel Club show.

"When people find out it's me, it's like it doesn't make sense," the 53-year-old Shaw said. "The Frenchie people know me because I've been around. But others, they seemed surprised."

That basically summed up Mitzie McGavic's reaction.

RISING Louisville Louisville has won six in a row and eight of nine to climb into a first-place tie atop the Big East. The Cardinals have beaten Marquette, Georgetown and Syracuse — heady accomplishments for a team that lost to Seton Hall last month. It gets harder from here: Louisville plays at Pitt on Sunday and then must face Notre Dame, Villanova and Georgetown. The latter game, to be staged in D.C., could decide the conference title.

FALLING Oregon An Elite Eight team last season, Oregon is in real danger of not making the field of 65. The smallish Ducks are 15-11 and 6-8 in the loaded Pac-10, and they've lost seven of 10. Ernie Kent has called his team one of the nation's best offensive units, but Oregon managed only 43 points in losing at Stanford two weeks ago. The Ducks fell to USC on Thursday and play UCLA at Pauley Pavilion today.

Tasting delicious samples of food from some of the Chino Valley's top restaurants will make a difference in the classroom.

Taking a "Taste of the Chino Valley" on Monday, March 3, not only means you won't have to cook dinner, but you'll be helping students and teachers as well.

Proceeds from the event will be used to provide scholarships to seniors and for classroom mini-grants. The cost is $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

More than 1,000 guests are expected.

This year's sponsors are Chaffey College and the Planes of Fame Air Museum.

All the fun is scheduled between 5 to 8 p.m. at the Planes of Fame Air Museum in the Chino Airport.

This is the 12th year the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce has presented the program. More than $75,000 for teachers and students has been raised over the years through The Taste of Chino Valley fundraiser.
