Digital Cameras

[Updated: February 21, 2008 @ 5:28 am] I'm a big fan of extra-wide point-and-shoot cameras so I'm looking forward to getting a closer look at the new Ricoh R8, announced yesterday. Like its predecessor the R7 (which wasn't released in the U.S.), the R8 sports a fairly wide f/3.3-5.2 28mm-200mm-equivalent 7.5x zoom lens. Ricoh only recently re-entered the U.S. camera market with last year's launch of the GR Digital II and won't be shipping the R50 (another wide compact announced yesterday, with a 5x zoom) in the U.S.

The R8 utilizes a 10-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CCD with a CCD Shift Vibration Correction function (read CCD-shift image stabilization).

Las Vegas Housing Bubble Update

Eventually I decided to act on my basic understanding of the problem and ultimately sold my home late in the mania phase (end of 2004--just a bit early, but no one can pick THE top), and made out quite well.

Later, though completely out of the housing ownership market and now renting, I continued on with my voracious research and gained a much better understanding of the myriad of complex economic issues that impacted this housing bubble. I eventually tried to pass my knowledge on to those around me, but to many, I was merely a gibbering lunatic who didn't know what the heck he was talking about. In due time, I became frustrated with my unsuccessful attempts in convincing these media-hyped & fed, brainwashed individuals, so I decided to take to the web--to possibly help others who were themselves trying to understand the developing situation.

Jimmy Kimmel Takes a Bullet For My Valentine

(HER) Hot and breaking Bullet For My Valentine, currently at #4 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums charts with their sophomore release, "Scream Aim Fire" (Jive/Zomba) will make their U.S. network TV debut on Wednesday, February 27 when they rock the house on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

The Welsh metal-core band will play the title track from their brand new album, currently Top 30 at Rock radio, as well as "Tears Don't Fail," one of the hit singles from their first album, "The Poison." "Jimmy Kimmel Live" airs at 12:05 ET/11:05PM CT.

Immediately following their Kimmel appearance, Bullet For My Valentine will fly to Denver, CO where they will join fellow headliners Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu to launch the 40-plus-city North American Taste of Chaos tour on Friday, February 29.

Currently, Bullet For My Valentine is enjoying international success with a sold-out headline tour of Europe and the UK, and simultaneous Top 5 chart entries for "Scream Aim Fire" across the globe.

A Different Perspective

Yogi Bear stood at the entrance to Jellystone National Park. He scouted unattended picnic baskets while awaiting Boo Boo Bears arrival home on the school bus. Yogi and Boo Boo were co-owners of a playoff fantasy team. As Yogi considered himself smarter than the average bear, he figured his team had a decided advantage, but he needed Boo Boos help in researching and deciphering the most recent data before submitting teams for the next round of games. So he waited anxiously and kept a look out for Ranger Smith. The school bus screeched to a halt at the entrance and Boo Boo climbed down the steps, dragging his back pack behind him. The bus roared off in a cloud of dust and rubble. Hey, Boo Boo! Were still in first place in our fantasy league. Lets go look at the stats and make our picks. I dont want to play anymore, Yogi.

Alice is trying to telephone Bob. Alice telephones Bob, and hears someone answer the phone in Bob's voice. They say "I'm sorry Alice, I don't want to talk to you", and hang up. Except, it wasn't actually Bob who answered the phone, it was Comcast using a special device to impersonate Bob's voice. Comcast might describe this as "delaying" Alice and Bob's conversation, on the theory that perhaps they'll keep calling each other until some day when Comcast isn't using their special device. They may also invoke the theory that Alice will call other people who are a lot like Bob, but aren't on Comcast's network, so her conversation will only be delayed.

If "delaying" traffic was Comcast's private intent, they were clearly making absurd and frequently incorrect assumptions about the protocols they were jamming.

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets

Just when it seemed this season had gotten as bad as it possibly could, things got even worse for the Miami Heat. They were torn apart at home to the Raptors Monday night, losing by 23 points as nine-point underdogs.

The 114-82 defeat was Miami's biggest of the season and it allowed the Raptors to shoot 66 percent through the first three quarters. At one point in the final period the Heat were down by a remarkable 39 points.

They have now lost 19 of their last 20 games, covering the spread just twice over that time. They have also dropped nine straight on the road and their 9-38 record is easily the worst in the NBA.

Pick: Pistons

Carmelo Anthony returned from an ankle injury last weekend and suddenly the Nuggets look like a more dynamic team.

Takahashi: Dress this cell phone according to mood

Dov Moran has a bright idea for the coming age where fashion and electronics will become intertwined. When you want a new look for an MP3 music player, put a new skin on it. If you want your phone to play cool videos, give it a jacket. And when you want to turn that phone into an alarm clock, find it a mate.

Moran is chief executive of modu, an Israeli company that has created a tiny cell phone with a built-in flash memory music player that is highly modular. When you want to change the look and feel of the device, you simply slide it into another device. It's like adding a memory chip card, except it changes the identity of the new device. With it, you can change your electronic gear in chameleon fashion to suit your mood.

You can, for instance, take your little modu phone and slide it into a digital camera.
