Mix: Gameloft, Safari HD, iPhone, Poolga

During a recent speech, Gameloft founder Michel Guillemot featured an image of an iPhone running a Gameloft game in one of his slides. Pocket Gamer suggests that although the image may have been a mock-up, given Gameloft's past relationship with Apple on iPod games, it would not be surprising to see the company develop games for the iPhone.

Safari HD, an unofficial hack for the Apple TV that allows users to browse the internet using the set-top box, has been released and updated for compatibility with Apple TV software 2.0. Safari HD uses the WebKit rendering engine, and supports web plugins such as Flash and any others supported by Safari.

A panel at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain last week praised the iPhone for its ease of use and interface.

MWC08: Nokia announces four new S60 mobile devices

We were expecting some device announcements at Mobile World Congress from Nokia and the did not disappoint with the announcement of 4 new devices. They announced the Nokia 6220 Classic, 6210 Navigator, N78, and N96. I had the opportunity to meet with various product managers to talk about the devices and also took several pictures and some video that will be posted later when I get some time away from the show floor.

The 6220 Classic is a very compact mobile phone designed for the person coming from a feature phone to the S60 platform who wants phone that excels in still photography since it has a Carl Zeiss 5-megapixel digital camera with a Xenon flash. It also has a GPS receiver and HSDPA support.

Another of the 6000 series announced was the 6210 Navigator that focuses on and provides a great GPS experience.

Covering the Collapse: Live-Blogging from Minneapolis

I borrowed her digital camera and snapped photos while she shot tape for 12 to 15 minutes. Then we set up for the standup. Before she rolled, I went over what I hoped to do: start tight on a twisted steel support and zoom out as I described the scene on the bridge, then move from the most compelling sites, north to south, narrating as she lingered on each spot, then back to me for an on-camera close. It was going to be a lengthy as-live and there wasn't much room for error, since the clock was ticking. Fortunately, we did it in one take, then shot a tease. There was still time left, so Cappy got some more b-roll until the call came to get back on the bus.

Sometimes we get so focused on the task at hand we lose sight of the bigger picture. I always make efforts not to let that happen, and as I stood at the railing I tried to soak up the scene below.

What the digirati want in 2008

2008 will see the iPhone getting offcially launched in India. However, we do wish to see the next version of the device, the iPhone 2, appearing on the horizon with features like 3G, Wi-Fi, no camera zoom that the ancestor missed.

Google's Android phone

While 2007 saw Google getting into the mobile phone space with the launch of its operating system Android. Taiwanese player HTC is working with Google on the hardware and we do hope to see handsets running on Android in 2008. While speculations hint at August as the time when the first handset on Android will be launched, there is a possibility of getting a glimpse of the first such device at the Mobile World Congress to be held at Barcelona in February, considering Google is also participating at the event.

A touchscreen BlackBerry

We do hope to see Research in Motion's BlackBerry to come up in a completely touchscreen avatar in 2008.

Candidates Urge Voter Turnout in Iowa

The only thing that counts is whether or not you show up to caucus," Democrat Barack Obama told a fired-up crowd of young and old packed into a high school gymnasium.

Amid murmurs of "Amen!" at a pizza parlor in Sergeant Bluff, Republican Mike Huckabee urged hundreds: "Don't go alone. Take people with you. Fill up your car. Rent a van. Hijack your church's bus, whatever you've got to do to get people to the caucus who are going to vote for me."

Candidates made the pitch repeatedly as they canvassed the state for Thursday's caucuses, the first votes of the presidential nominating process. At least 130,000 Democrats and 80,000 Republicans are expected to participate in 1,781 neighborhood meetings at schools, fire stations and community centers across Iowa on what is forecast to be a clear but cold night.

Job expo helps inmates prepare for future outside lockup

STACY KAPLUS was ready.

In the gymnasium on the first floor of Santa Rita county jail Friday, she had her resume, cover letter and business cards. She even had thank-you notes ready to send to the people she would meet.

"I never wanted to do anything," she said. "(Now) I'm doing something for myself."

Kaplus was among hundreds of minimum-security inmates in the Alameda County lockup looking toward a futureon the outside. More than 20 employment recruitment, social and health organizations showed up Friday to give the inmates information on programs and services that can get them jobs, education and health care.

Kaplus, who spent 10 years in the Army, also found out about veterans services for which she may be eligible.

This is the second career-type fair the jail has held, said Alameda County sheriff's Sgt.

Next-gen mobiles: a computer in every pocket

Sony Ericsson has launched two new handsets, and it's a struggle to choose between them. The most eye-catching is certainly the Xperia X1e, with its full slide-out keyboard, GPS, Wi-Fi and styling that might yet give the iPhone a run for its money.
