Tech meets tough in LR3

When you take delivery of a new car, the salesperson normally sits in the passenger seat, spends a few minutes making sure you're familiar with all the controls, and then bids you good luck.

If you happen to be buying today's test car - a 2008 Land Rover LR3 - an hour's worth of classroom instruction would only be enough to touch on the vehicle's multiple systems and controls. That's certainly one reason the company includes a lengthy DVD tutorial along with the thick owner's manual. The DVD is must viewing for any new Rover owner - it has an amazing amount of technology incorporated into its innate toughness.

Last spring, I was able to drive several Land Rovers on an off-road course the company's marketers set up on the 25-acre grounds of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Endi cott House in Dedham.

Jurors see school intruder in recording

A man claiming to want a job is allowed into Clarke Middle School, but he ducks into a room, dons a jacket with a hood pulled down low and furtively looks both ways before sneaking into a girls' restroom and trying to rape a 12-year-old student.

That's what prosecutors claim 32-year-old Michael James Kirt did the morning of March 1, and on Wednesday they showed jurors in Clarke County Superior Court surveillance camera footage that caught everything Kirt did in the Baxter Street school - except while he was in the restroom where the alleged attack happened.

The girl he allegedly cornered in a bathroom stall screamed and attracted the attention of school employees, one of whom testified Wednesday that Kirt was holding up his pants, which had fallen "below his butt" as he fled.

Reading the runes for Apple

Every January, Steve Jobs stands on the Macworld stage to announce Apple's plans for the year ahead and show off new products and services. What will there be this year? And how has it done lately, and how will it fare? And when - if ever - will Steve Jobs step down? We asked former Apple employees, software developers and analysts for their views.

We did ask a number of current Apple employees to take part anonymously; all however declined.

Chuq Von Rospach spent 17 years at Apple, working on enterprise and IT projects, before joining a Silicon Valley startup and "can now watch a Macworld Keynote without stressing out that everything works". David Sobotta worked at Apple for nearly 20 years, leaving in 2004 as director of federal sales. Mike Evangelist worked for Apple until July 2002, responsible for Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro and iDVD.
