The longevity of rechargeable digital camera batteries varies greatly, but camera battery life in general has improved over the past couple of years. Just about any digital camera with a dedicated battery or a decent set of AA rechargeables should get you through at least an average day of shooting. With dedicated lithium-ion batteries, you can consider it a rule of thumb that the smaller the cell, the shorter the life. If you buy a camera that takes AAs and doesn't come with rechargeables, you should purchase cells with the highest mAh rating you can find to get the longest life. To extend the shooting time of digital SLR cameras, manufacturers often sell compatible vertical grips that attach to the main body of the camera and hold an additional battery, as well as incorporating a second set of controls for vertically oriented shooting.

Galleries are to Madison as tank tops are to Hooters. So we also better bring ...

Two artists: One impressionist, one expressionist. We'll have each sit on the Snow Ark's deck and paint a polar bear in a snow storm. Let the sparks fly!

Two people who never shovel their walks.

Nah, we 'll leave them behind.

Ahoy! All ashore who's going ashore!

Mayor Dave's picks:

If I were to suggest others that might need a place on the ark, I'd recommend:

- Two Ph.D. cab drivers.

- One Mike Huckabee supporter

(unrealistic to find two).

- Two people to suggest that we keep the bars open all night as the answer to every municipal problem.

- Two people from every city committee and commission (this adds up to 1.5 million people).

Two arrested, charged in Oakland man's murder

Last week, Crowder was arrested and booked in the Berkeley Jail, with bail set at $50,000, on suspicion of making death threats against another man on a Berkeley basketball court. Police said he told the man that the last time someone messed with him that man ended up dead. He then alluded to the Drummond case, Kusmiss said.

"During the police interview, Crowder identified Beaudreaux as the shooter," she said. "That was corroborated by witness accounts."

Beaudreaux was arrested Friday in San Pablo.

Relatives of Drummond were not immediately available to comment Wednesday.

After emigrating from Jamaica, Drummond grew up in Upland in San Bernardino County. He came to the Bay Area in 2003 and had been working for UPS at the Oakland airport at the time of his death.

Golf Gift Do's and Don'ts

Save the receipt, however, and don't take the shrink wrap off the clubhead. At some shops, doing so will instantly reduce the club's return value by 30%, even if it never strikes a ball. (Feel free to buy clubs for kids or beginners, though, since they haven't yet had time to build the full-scale equipment neuroses that avid golfers develop.)

Another generally safe golf-gift category is books, if only because they aren't wildly expensive and the recipient can easily store (or hide) a golf book on a bookshelf -- read or unread, you'll probably never know.

Golf books come in two categories: humongous and those actually meant to be read. The former, usually filled with lush photographs of exotic courses taken either 30 minutes before sunset or 30 minutes after sunrise, are essentially golf pornography.

Expo Daily Round-Up: iPod gadgets and other goodies

The sun has set on Macworld Expo 2008, and what a week it was. For me, it started with keynote-pundit stalking, then a day of cameras and printers, then a deep-geek dive into storage stuff, and finally—in this installment—a Friday of fun: speakers, docks, FM tuners, and other iPod gadgetry; and then a top-quality laptop microphone, a tricky lens for my digital SLR, and more.

Fraud US-Style: Fake Videos and Elections

First the videos with bin Laden ones Exhibit A. He always seems to pop up strategically at well-timed moments, almost like we planned it that way. Evidence points that way. Consider the one on Friday (September 7) before the sixth 9/11 anniversary in 2007. Digital image forensics expert, Neal Krawetz of Hactor Factor, said it was full of low quality visual and audio splices, a likely fake. Striking also was bin Laden's beard that was gray in recent images. In this video, it's black. In addition, the footage has him dressed in a white hat and shirt and yellow sweater, precisely his same attire on an October 29, 2004 video. In addition, the background, lighting, desk and camera angle are the same. Krawetz noted that "if you overlay the 2007 and 2004 videos, bin Laden's face is the same (unaged).
